This renovation reimagines a series of railroad apartments within an existing multiple dwelling building as contemporary urban flats. The original layouts, characterized by multiple points of entry and compartmentalized rooms reminiscent of historic SRO configurations, were reorganized around a single, clearly defined entrance sequence.

A new central core consolidates storage, kitchens, and bathrooms, freeing the perimeter of the apartments for open and flexible living spaces. This strategy improves the flow of natural light throughout the interiors and establishes unobstructed sightlines across the full depth of each residence.

Large bedrooms positioned at opposite ends of the apartments can be separated or connected through floor-to-ceiling pocket doors, allowing the spaces to adapt to varying levels of privacy and communal living. Contrasting materials and carefully considered interventions to both the interior and exterior provide the building with a renewed identity while remaining sensitive to the character of the surrounding streetscape.
