Dutchess County Manor

The 10,000 sf, 7-bedroom 6-bathroom residence is situated on a 145-acre horse farm with additional guest and caretaker houses as well as horse stables and a 15,000 sf riding arena. The main goal of the renovation was to transform the classical residence into a more modern home that remains in harmony with the traditional facade and ornamental details found throughout the house.

The most dramatic change occurred in the "Atelier" space where a former grand stair was removed to make room for a 400 sf, 20-foot-high vertical living space with views onto the spectacular property gardens. The new stair was moved to the main entry hall, inspired by classic NYC townhouses where stairs are located in close proximity to the entrance door.

Strategic openings were introduced to allow natural light to flood into the house where it was previously dark and shut off from the scenic landscape.

Native wood species as well as natural stones have been used throughout the house allowing the residence to feel well connected to the surrounding nature. Reclaimed materials from the demolished main house were either used in the Guest and Caretaker house renovations or re-purposed in the main residence. This sustainable approach allowed the project to reduce waste and lower the carbon footprint of the renovation.
