Driven by an interest in the latent potential of underutilized urban properties, this proposal explores a vertical expansion of an existing masonry building within the dense fabric of New York City. The intervention seeks to increase residential capacity while preserving and enhancing the qualities of the existing structure.

Inspired by the clarity and lightness of Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth House, the addition takes the form of transparent steel and glass volumes that appear to float above the historic masonry base. A recessed intermediate level accommodates new mechanical systems, allowing the rooftop to remain unobstructed and available as shared outdoor space for residents.

The resulting composition establishes a deliberate contrast between old and new, combining the permanence of the existing structure with a lightweight architectural expression that maximizes light, views, and openness.
